🔹 What is IB?
Infectious Bronchitis (IB) is a highly contagious viral disease of chickens caused by a Coronavirus.
It mainly affects the respiratory system, but can also damage the kidneys and reproductive tract.
🔹 Transmission
-
Airborne droplets (sneezing, coughing)
-
Direct contact with infected birds
-
Contaminated equipment, feed, water, clothing
-
No vertical transmission (not passed through the egg)
🔹 Symptoms in Chickens
Chicks & Young Birds:
-
Sneezing, coughing, rales (gurgling sounds)
-
Nasal discharge, watery eyes
-
Huddling, poor growth
-
High morbidity (almost all birds affected), but mortality usually 10–20% (higher if secondary infections occur)
Layers (hens):
-
Drop in egg production (up to 70%)
-
Misshaped, soft-shelled, or thin-shelled eggs
-
Watery egg whites (poor internal egg quality)
Nephropathogenic Strains:
-
Increased water intake
-
Wet litter
-
Swollen kidneys → high mortality
🔹 Diagnosis
-
Based on clinical signs + lab tests (PCR, virus isolation, serology).
-
Often confused with CRD (Mycoplasma), ILT, or ND (Newcastle Disease).
🔹 Treatment
⚠️ No direct cure (since it’s a viral disease).
Management focuses on:
-
Supportive care: vitamins (A, D, E, C), electrolytes, probiotics.
-
Antibiotics (only to control secondary bacterial infections like E. coli).
-
Good ventilation & warm temperature in the shed.
-
Reduce stress.
🔹 Prevention
-
Vaccination is the best protection:
-
Live vaccines (Massachusetts, 4/91, etc.) for chicks.
-
Inactivated vaccines for layers and breeders.
-
-
Biosecurity: restrict visitors, disinfect equipment, proper ventilation.
-
Good nutrition & management to boost immunity.
✅ Summary:
IB is a viral respiratory disease in chickens that also harms kidneys and egg production. There is no treatment, only supportive care, and prevention relies heavily on vaccination and strict biosecurity.
